Break a task down without doing the busywork. Workly can generate subtasks with AI from your task name and description, streaming them directly into the subtask list.
Generate subtasks
- Open any task — while creating a new task or editing an existing one
- Make sure the task has a name. The button is disabled until you enter one (the tooltip says Enter a task name first).
- Optionally add a description — Workly uses it as extra context
- Scroll to the Subtasks section
- Click Generate Subtasks
Subtasks stream into the list in real time as the AI generates them.
Stop early
While generation is running, the button changes to Stop. Click it any time to cancel — anything already streamed in is kept.
Edit, delete, rearrange
Generated subtasks are regular subtasks. You can:
- Click a subtask name to edit it inline. Enter saves; Escape cancels.
- Delete any subtask you don’t want
- Add assignees, priority, and due dates afterwards
Tips for better suggestions
- Give the task a clear, action-oriented name — Launch April newsletter beats Marketing
- Add a few sentences of context before clicking Generate Subtasks
- If the first round isn’t quite right, refine the title or description and click Generate Subtasks again
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find Generate Subtasks?
Open any task and scroll to the Subtasks section. The Generate Subtasks button sits inside that section.
Why is the button disabled?
It needs a task name first — the tooltip says “Enter a task name first”. As soon as you type a name, the button activates.
Can I edit the subtasks the AI creates?
Yes. They’re regular subtasks — click to rename, delete the ones you don’t want, and add assignees, priorities, or due dates.
How do I stop generation midway?
While generating, the button changes to Stop. Click it to cancel — anything already streamed is kept.
Can I run it more than once?
Yes. Refining the title or description usually produces better suggestions on the next pass.
