Break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable pieces using subtasks in Workly. Subtasks help you track granular progress and assign different parts of a larger task to different team members.
Create a subtask
- Open a task
- Scroll to the Subtasks section in the task detail panel
- Click Add Subtask
- Enter the subtask name and press Enter
Subtasks have all the same properties as regular tasks — status, priority, assignee, due date, and custom fields.
Track progress
The parent task shows a subtask progress bar indicating how many subtasks are completed versus total. For example, “3/5 completed” with a visual progress indicator. This gives you a quick sense of how much work remains.
Manage subtasks
- Assign subtasks — Each subtask can have its own assignee, different from the parent task
- Set priorities — Subtasks can have independent priority levels
- Set due dates — Each subtask can have its own deadline
- Change status — Update subtask status independently
- Delete subtasks — Remove subtasks you no longer need
Subtasks in List view
In List view, subtasks are nested under their parent task. Click the expand arrow on a parent task to show or hide its subtasks. You can also see the subtask count displayed next to the parent task name.
Complete parent task with open subtasks
When you try to mark a parent task as complete while it still has open subtasks, Workly will notify you of the remaining incomplete subtasks. You can choose to complete the parent anyway or go back and finish the subtasks first.
