Sections help you group related tasks within a project in Workly. Think of them as folders or headings that add structure to your task list — for example, grouping tasks by sprint, feature area, or project phase.
Create a section
- Open a project
- Click the Add Section button
- Enter a section name (e.g. “Sprint 1”, “Design Phase”, “Backlog”)
- Choose a section colour from the colour palette
- Click Create
The section appears in your task list with a coloured header. You can now add tasks under this section.
Add tasks to a section
When adding a new task, it’s automatically placed in the section you’re currently viewing. You can also:
- Drag and drop existing tasks between sections in List view
- Move tasks to a different section from the task detail panel
Section colours
Each section can have its own colour, making it visually easy to distinguish between groups. Section colours appear as a coloured band on the section header in both List and Kanban views.
Collapse and expand
Click the section header to collapse or expand its tasks. Use the Collapse All and Expand All buttons in the toolbar to toggle all sections at once. This is useful when you want to focus on a specific part of your project.
Group by options
Besides sections, Workly lets you group tasks by other properties:
- Status — Group by task status (To Do, In Progress, etc.)
- Priority — Group by priority level
- Assignee — Group by assigned team member
- Custom fields — Group by any single-select custom column
Switch the grouping from the Group By menu in the toolbar.
